VOLUSIA COUNTY JUNIOR LIFEGUARDS HOST LOCAL
KIDS AT BEACH
Members of the Volusia County Junior Lifeguard program are hosting
children from the Holly Hill, Port Orange and West Volusia Police
Athletic Leagues for water safety instruction during the week of July
28. Approximately 50 children are participating daily from 9 a.m. - 1
p.m. through Friday, August 1, at Lighthouse Point Park in Ponce Inlet.
During the “Healthy Kids Camp” week, children receive free lessons
and information on water safety, swimming and paddling techniques and
marine ecology. They also have time to surf and boogie board and enjoy
snacks and lunch. The week’s activities end with a lifeguard competition
from 9 a.m. - noon Friday, Aug. 1, when the children will put into
practice what they’ve learned all week.
Sponsored by the Volusia County Beach Patrol, more than 500 children
have enjoyed the week-long excursion to the beach since 1997.
“The goal of the Healthy Kids Camp is to take youths from around the
county and teach them basic water safety and appreciation of the unique
environment we have at the beach,” said Capt. Scott Petersohn. “These
are children who normally would not get this opportunity. Our hope is
the next time they are around water they are safer.”
