WORKSHOP FOR CONSERVATION DESIGN OF HAMLETS AND
VILLAGES
Volusia County Planning and Development Services is sponsoring a
Randall Arendt workshop for conservation design of hamlets and villages
from 12:30 - 5 p.m., Tuesday, July 29, in the first floor training rooms
of the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Center, 123 W. Indiana Ave.,
DeLand.
Cosponsored by the Volusia County Association for Responsible
Development (VCARD), this hands-on free workshop is based on the
American Planning Association’s best selling book from the planning
advisory service series: Crossroads, Hamlet, Village and Town; Design
Characteristics of Traditional Neighborhoods, Old and New by Randall
Arendt.
During the workshop, Arendt will outline concept and design
principles in his book, which was published in 1999. The book covers
designing, regulating, and reviewing proposals for traditional
neighborhoods - new villages, hamlets and subdivisions that are a
greener subset of conservation design, according to the workshop
planners.
Following Arendt’s presentation, participants will break into groups
to design rural villages as a way to enhance their understanding of the
design principles.
Seating for the workshop is limited. For more information and to
RSVP, please call Carol McFarlane, a Volusia County planner, at
cmcfarlane@co.volusia.fl.us
or by calling (386) 736-5959 ext. 2025.
In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Florida
Statutes, persons with disabilities needing special accommodation to
participate in the workshop should request assistance at least two
business days before the workshop.
