VOLUSIA COUNTY JUNIOR LIFEGUARDS GEAR UP FOR COMPETITION

Members of Volusia County Beach Patrol’s Junior Lifeguard program will put to the test what they have been learning all summer. A Junior Lifeguard competition will be from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, on the beach in front of Frank Rendon Park, 2701 S. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach Shores.

More than 200 members of the Volusia County Junior Lifeguard program will be competing in lifesaving events, according to Chris Nowviskie, program coordinator.

Events include a beach run, surf swim, paddleboard race, a buoy rescue race, surf swim relay, an ironguard race and beach flags. All of the competitions are open for the public to attend.

Now in its 18th year, the Junior Lifeguard program is for youths ages 9 - 15 and provides instruction in techniques of beach safety and lifesaving. Junior lifeguards undergo professional surf training and daily team relays involving surfboard paddling, swimming, running and beach flags. In addition, students are instructed in first aid and CPR techniques.

For more information, please call the Volusia County Beach Patrol at (386) 239-6414 or visit www.volusia.org/beach.
